    Holds a B.A. with Honors in Economics from St. Stephen’s College, New Delhi, a LLB degree from Campus Law Centre, Delhi University and an LLM and S.J.D. from Harvard Law School, U.S.A. Enrolled with the Bar Council of Maharashtra and mainly practised before the Bombay High Court and Supreme Court of India. Designated as a Senior Advocate and Additional Solicitor General of India in 1998.

    Visiting Professor of Comparative Constitutional Law at the University of Mumbai. Visiting Professor at Oklahoma University School of Law, USA.

    Delivered lectures at the Australian National University, Harvard Law School, Yale Law School and the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa. Speaker at conferences organised by bodies of the United Nations including United Nations High Commission on Human Rights, International Labour Organisation, United Nations Environmental Program, the World Bank and Asian Development Bank.

    Elevated to the Bench of the Bombay High Court on March 29, 2000. Director of Maharashtra Judicial Academy.

    Sworn in as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court from October 31, 2013.

    Elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on May 13, 2016.

    Sworn in as the Chief Justice of India on November 9, 2022.
