Hon’ble Mr. Justice K.V. Viswanathan, Judge Supreme Court of India
- Born on 26th May 1966.
- Father Shri K.V. Venkataraman and Mother Mrs. Lalitha Venkataraman.
- Married to Mrs. Jaishree Viswanathan; Two daughters.
- Studied at Arokiamatha Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Pollachi; Sainik School Amaravathinagar and at St. Joseph’s Higher Secondary School, Ooty.
- Graduated with first rank from the Coimbatore Law College, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore as part of the first batch of the five-year law course (1983 – 1988) and obtained the Degree of Bachelor of Laws.
- Enrolled as an Advocate on the roll of the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu on 28th October 1988 and transferred to the roll of the Bar Council of Delhi.
- Attended the Chambers of late Shri K. A. Ramachandran, a leading criminal lawyer at Coimbatore during college days between 1983 and 1988.
- Later joined the Chambers of Mr. C. S. Vaidyanathan, Senior Advocate and former Additional Solicitor General, at New Delhi from November, 1988 and worked till October, 1990. Assisted him in important cases before the Supreme Court, the Delhi High Court and various subordinate Courts and Tribunals in Delhi.
- Chambered with Mr. K. K. Venugopal, Senior Advocate and former Attorney General for India, from November, 1990 to June, 1995 and appeared with him in important cases before the Supreme Court and High Courts.
- Attended the Program of Instruction for Lawyers at the Harvard Law School, Boston, Massachusetts in June, 2002.
- Designated as a Senior Advocate by the Full Court of the Supreme Court of India on 28th April 2009.
- Appointed as the Additional Solicitor General of India on 26th August 2013 and held the position till May, 2014.
- During the course of his practice appeared before the Supreme Court of India and several High Courts across the country. As a Senior Advocate and as Additional Solicitor General, appeared in wide range of matters on diverse subjects of law, including several appearances before the Constitution Benches of the Supreme Court.
- Appeared as amicus curiae in several important matters before the Supreme Court.
- Has been a Member of the National Legal Services Authority [NALSA].
- Has been a member of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee.
- Has been Secretary and later Treasurer of the Supreme Court Middle Income Group Legal Aid Committee
- Appeared before the Justice Verma Commission of Inquiry and the Justice M.C. Jain Commission of Inquiry in 1991.
- Contributed to the Chief Justice J. S. Verma Committee Report on ‘Effectuation of Fundamental Duties’ under the topic ‘Administration of Justice’.
- Contributed editorial articles to various national publications and have delivered lectures in law colleges.
- Other interests include reading Non-fiction and watching all Sport.
- Elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India, directly from the Bar on 19th May, 2023.
